Blood Sample Collection (Phlebotomy and Venepuncture)

The department currently offers a phlebotomy service for wards at Peterborough City Hospital, with ward rounds between 08:30am and 12:00pm, as well as a service at the phlebotomy suite at Stamford Hospital between 08:30am and 16:15pm Mon-Fri.

Venepuncture
The laboratory currently uses the Sarstedt collection system. Please click here or see document attached below for detailed instructions on the collection system.
Sample Storage and Disposal
Samples should taken and stored under the correct conditions for the tests requested. Please click on the link for sample storage conditions below or If you require any guidance on the storage procedures or conditions please contact Pathology on (01733) 678468.
For any venepuncture waste or pathology waste, this should be disposed of following the the HS-PATHWST SOP

Please note:
Patients presenting with a request form for blood tests will be viewed as providing implied consent and the venepuncture procedure explained to ensure that patients fully understand and are comfortable with the process. Any patients requiring information regarding the tests requested, their function and clinical implications will be referred to the requesting clinician. The patient will be afforded the opportunity to defer venepuncture until the requisite information has been obtained.
