To: All service users, Pathology department (NWAFT)

Date: 11th October 2021

Availability of new ‘Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S (‘spike’) antibody test

From Monday 11th October 2021, there will be an additional Anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody test available from the Pathology department within NWAFT. The new test detects antibodies against the ‘S’ (spike) antigen of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus, and is specifically to be used for patients who may be eligible for COVID-19 monoclonal antibody therapy (nMAB).

The test will be processed in the Clinical Biochemistry department at PCH and available on a 24/7 basis.

Test indications are as follows:

  • Anti-SARS-CoV-2 Ab – this is the existing test (against the ‘N’ nucleocapsid antigen), this is used for the diagnosis of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection
  • Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S Ab – this is the new test (against the ‘S’ spike antigen), this is to be used for the determining of suitability for nMAB treatment

When requesting via Sunquest ICE, both tests are available from the ‘COVID (Path & DI)’ page, with guidance in place for the requesting process to ensure that the correct test is requested.

When requesting manually (e.g. from the Hinchingbrooke Hospital site), please state on the request form if the antibody test is required for determining suitability for nMAB treatment to ensure that the appropriate antibody test is carried out on receipt at the PCH laboratory.
