Faecal Immunochemical Testing (FIT)

Faecal Immunochemical Testing (FIT)
FHB, FIT, faecal haemoglobin
Sample is collected into the Sentinel FIT collection device. Instructions for the collection of samples are available from the laboratory, please contact peh-tr.chemimm@nhs.net [1] for details.
72hrs
Used in the investigation of patients with symptoms of colorectal cancer. FIT can be used to rule out significant disease and also to guide fast track referral. See information for GPs below.
There are no known methodological interferences. The matrix of faeces samples can sometimes be inconsistent, which can give results which vary in reproducibility between patient samples. For further information please contact the laboratory.
A FIT with a value of <10ng/g faeces is a negative result. If FIT is negative and there is no anaemia the risk of cancer is less than 1% (see information for GPs).
