Eye Infections

Neonatal Conjunctivitis
Swabs in bacterial transport medium (BTM) should be sent. In addition, please send conjunctival scrapings for chlamydia investigation collected with the special Abbott Multi-collect specimen collection kit. As Chlamydia trachomatis is an intracellular pathogen, it is essential to submit cellular material from the conjunctiva collected by rolling the swab firmly over the everted eyelid, after first wiping away any discharge or pus, which can be sent for bacterial culture.
Adult Conjunctivitis
Swabs in bacterial transport medium (BTM) should be sent. If Chlamydia infection is suspected, please send conjunctival scrapings, collected as in above paragraph. If viral infection is suspected, please send swabs in virus transport medium (VTM) for viral culture.
Acanthamoeba Culture
Is also available from conjunctival scrapings or contact lenses/fluid
