Uncertainty of Measurement for Immunology assays

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

The nature of immunoassays means that they are likely to have a fair degree of uncertainty.

To minimise this the laboratory employs rigorous control procedures

Where appropriate results are clinically commented upon by Consultant staff.  However results must be interpreted in the specific clinical context.  No immunology test results will give a definitive diagnosis or prognosis and should not be used in isolation to direct clinical management.  Knowledge of clinical sensitivity and specificity will aid likelihood of disease presence.  Where possible these are quoted in the test information details.  Clinical advice is available from the laboratory (x8454).

Due to the uncertain nature of Immunology tests it is important to note that the same tests performed in different centres may not show comparable results.  We are happy to discuss results as required.
