Used in the investigation of left ventricular dysfunction.

Refer to NICE Clinical Guideline 108 (Chronic heart failure in adults) and NICE Clinical Guideline 187 (Acute heart failure: diagnosis and management) for further information.

In the investigation of acute heart failure' NICE guidance states NT pro-BNP levels < 300 ng/L excludes heart failure. Levels > 300 ng/L are not specific for heart failure. Contact heart failure nurse if this is most likely diagnosis.

Significantly raised levels are frequently seen in AF, IHD, PE, respiratory or renal disease, cirrhosis, hyperthyroidism or sepsis
