The quantitative determination of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in urine is employed in the diagnosis of carcinoid syndrome and for the monitoring of therapy. | |
The following foodstuffs contain large amounts of serotonin, and their consumption results in an increase in 5-HIAA excretion. Patients should avoid these foodstuffs 2 days prior to and during the collection: Aubergines, avocados, bananas, blackcurrants, damson plums, gooseberries, melons, mirabelle plums, pineapples, red currants, tomatoes and walnuts. | |
