Test indications

The classical autoantibody in myasthenia gravis (MG) is the anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody. In around 20% of cases of myasthenia gravis the AChR Ab is negative, and some of the remainder have an alternative autoantibody against muscle-specific kinase (MuSK). MuSK antibodies are involved in the pathogenesis of MG more commonly in adults than children. We do not automatically request MuSK antibodies, but if you strongly suspect myasthenia gravis and the AChR antibody is negative, please tell the laboratory and we will request this test from a reference laboratory.
